Empirical research

The Virtual Marine Scientist project will serve as an empirical study investigating the following research questions:

  1. How can virtual labs be integrated into teaching? What are the major affordances and obstacles that teachers perceive? How can use be facilitated? This implies exploring how teachers perceive virtual labs, as well as ascertaining when and how such resources can be made use of.

    This problem will be studied through teacher interviews and observation throughout lab work.

  2. What characterises students’ work and collaboration in the lab? How do they succeed in mastering the principles of experimental work? To what extent are they able to learn about the relevant environmental science concepts in a virtual setting? This refers to studying the processes of student work and collaboration.

    This will be documented via observation and video recording of selected projects. We will also collect the lab reports and can follow the students’ work through logged data in the system.

  3. A summative evaluation of the students’ ability to carry out experiments, explain their work procedures and present results etc.


This will be carried out through tests, observation and teacher evaluations, as well as evaluations of the form and content of the final reports delivered in class.

The LETStudio and LinCS will be in charge of leading this research project.
