Insights in the In-Service and Pre-Service Project "Children and Adults Explore Mathematics together"

For a long time mathematics education has not been part of pre-service education in early childhood education in Germany and some other countries. After changing curricula and educational policy a need for designing components for mathematics education in pre-service education and also in in-service education arose.

The long-term in-service and pre-service project "Children and Adults Explore Mathematics together" addresses both needs. In-service and pre-service education components for early mathematics education are designed to give both professionals and students in early childhood the possibility to connect various professional competencies.

The ¿heart¿ of this project is a join-in-studio which is called "MachmitWerkstatt-MiniMa". At this join-in-studio professionals in early childhood can play together with their children in prepared playing and exploring environments and explore mathematical aspects together. One important element of the join-in-studio setting lies in the videography of each visit at the studio. So a "sheltered" room of action is created with excellent conditions for observation and reflection.

In the seminar I will present how the join-in-studio is linked to different components of in- and pre-service education. I would like to point out how different facets of professional competences can be addressed as well as how different kind of reflective elements contributes to professional development.
