Research

The department's fields of knowledge include learning, teaching, communication and identity among children, young people and adults. The research at the department is characterized by its strong ties to practice and its interest in timely and socially relevant issues, such as migration and digitalization. In terms of scientific disciplines, the research is mainly based in the field of education and child and youth studies.

Three research areas

The research is organized into three research areas. The three areas have a collegial organization and accommodate a number of smaller groups within which research is conducted. Each of the three areas is actively involved in education as well as research.

Early Childhood Education (ECE) focuses on children’s meaning making and the political, social and cultural conditions for learning at different ages. The ECE research field is interdisciplinary, combining research in education, psychology, sociology, as well as educational disciplines like mathematics, languages, science, and aesthetics. Contexts explored include preschool and school, family life and children’s leisure time activities.

Childhood, Youth, Culture and Learning (CYCL) is an interdisciplinary research environment which draws on pedagogy, child and youth studies, social work, sociology, gender studies, cultural studies and social psychology. The research focuses on children and adolescents, and the function and purpose of education in relation to leisure time, family and everyday life. Key concepts are gender, power, sexuality, identity, segregation, ethnicity, race, learning and globalization.

Learning and IT (LIT) takes an interest in the ways digitalization and access to information reform formal education as well as other learning contexts, and what these shifts mean for our view of learning and knowledge. Much of the work is interdisciplinary and conducted in collaboration with researchers at other faculties.
