About Åsa Mäkitalo

Åsa Mäkitalo is Professor of Education with a background in human resource and organisation studies. In 2006-2018 she was a co-director of LinCS, a CoE in Research on Learning and IT. In 2010 she established the University of Gothenburg LETStudio - a network of scholars conducting interdisciplinary research on how technologies are intertwined in core activities in society with a focus on the transformation of knowledge and learning practices.

Åsa specialises in research on institutional communication that concern what it implies to appropriate, collectively maintain, and develop institutional forms of knowing. The analytical focus is on participants' ways of organising and coordinating activities including the sense-making practices that are triggered when new issues or social dilemmas need to be attended to and transformed into accountable ways of working. Mäkitalo also takes an interest in the activities institutions arrange in order to intergrate or activate individuals or groups to participate a normatively preferred community.

Her empirical work range from studies in schools to higher education and work settings and can be summarized as follows:

  • Professional Trust and Autonomous Systems. Funded by Marianne and Marcus Wallenberg Foundation. (2020-cont.) Co-applicant.
  • LETCOM - Learning and teaching through controversy mapping. Funded by the Swedish Research Council. (2015-cont.) Scientific leader.
  • LETStudio – The University of Gothenburg Learning and Media Technology Studio (2010-cont.) Scientific leader.
  • MobCitSci - Taking science to the crowd: Researchers, programmers and volunteer contributors transforming science online. Funded by Marianne and Marcus Wallenberg Foundation (2014-2018). Researcher.
  • LinCS – The Linnaeus Centre for Research on Learning, Interaction and Mediated Communication in contemporary Society. CoE with 10 years of funding from The Swedish Research Council. (2006-2018). Co-Director.
