About Åsa Mäkitalo

Åsa Mäkitalo is Professor of Education with a background in human resource and organisation studies. In 2006-2018 she was a co-director of LinCS, a CoE in Research on Learning and IT. In 2010 she established the University of Gothenburg LETStudio - a network of scholars conducting interdisciplinary research on how technologies are intertwined in core activities in society with a focus on the transformation of knowledge and learning practices.

Mäkitalo specialises in research on institutional communication from a sociocultural and dialogical perspective. Her research concerns what it implies to appropriate, collectively maintain, and develop institutional forms of knowing. The analytical focus is on  institutional forms of knowing and remembering, on practices of organising and coordinating activities as well as participants' sense-making and reasoning. Mäkitalo also takes an interest in the activities institutions arrange in order to intergrate or activate individuals or groups to participate a normatively preferred community.

Recent research activities
Her empirical work range from studies in schools to higher education and work settings and can be summarized as follows:

• Technologies and the transformation of expertise
• The social organisation of learning and knowing
• Remembering as an institutional practice
• Social, moral and cognitive accountability
• Forms of participation and co-production of knowledge
